The Andrzej Szwalbe Collection, Ostromecko

The collection was started in 1970 when the Pomeranian Philharmonic acquired a Carl Julius Gebauhr grand piano produced in Königsberg from the Technical School of Chemistry and Electronics in Grudziądz. Over the next few years director Andrzej Szwalbe and Dr (now Professor) Benjamin Vogel amassed a unique collection of over fifty pianos. Of particular value are the collection's square pianos. Among the Polish piano makers whose instruments are part of the collection, the most numerous group are Warsaw-based manufacturers: Kasper Zdrodowski, Józef Budynowicz, Antoni Zakrzewski, and Krall&Seidler. All of the instruments date back to the 19th century. The collection is located in the Mostowski Palace in Ostromecko. Formerly, it was known as the Collection of Historical Pianos of the Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz. Currently, it is administered by the Municipal Culture Centre in Bydgoszcz.
